Surface And Structure
From the structure Images my group gave me words such as Joins, curved, folded, flow and symmetrical and from the surface images Peel, hollow, inter layered and multilayered. My research images are a combination of found, and sourced.
From those words i had to make models so i started with basic materials like paper using folds and rolling the paper into tubes. The paper became stronger when folded or rolled so when they were pushed down vertically they resisted more. From an aesthetic point of view curving the paper and stapling it has a sleek effect and could create very bold forms when used on a larger scale.
The product can hold books, stationary, the laptop and papers its a lightweight product that is cheap to produce and easy to make. It can even use wasted or recycled 'for sale' signs because these provide a strong and stable material that can be worked easily with adhesives and cutting.
Bold and simple line structures can have lots of definition when it comes to things like buildings, objects and furniture. Outdoor entrance structures, gates and house fronts are all made from wood but have strong patterns in their structure and can look very appealing as a basic pattern with a nice exterior.
Other more contemporary and modern metal working and plastic work also have good effects to refine a design if they also use basic colours.
Finish It Yourself, David Graas
Finish it Yourself is a fun inter active way to show structure of the chair and how it works letting the user create it themselves. It's a family friendly activity a well as a piece of furniture. The contemporary design is made from cardboard and will be very cheap to produce, probably being laser cut and packaged in a flat pack.
I sourced lots of natural surfaces such as woods, metals and food, quite simple natural colours. using cardboard, paper, woods , metals, to create sturdy structures with quality finishes can be incorporated into my designs.
Chick 'n' Egg Chair, Responsive Design
The chick 'n' egg chair looks like a complex honey comb structure but is a relatively simple design, it can be adapted to a children's size or an adults and would suit the home as a piece of furniture. Because it's a cardboard product its lightweight and easy to move as well as being cheap to produce and buy, for the quality of design.
To research the space I'm designing for and the thins it needs to hold i looked at my 16 year old sisters desk to see they kinds of contents for the product. the desk will have ample space for a standalone storage product because all of the cup holders and books can be stored in the product.
It is comprised of lots of pieces of cardboard using simple slots that could be laser cut easily. This material comes in varied thicknesses so could be easily adapted to the general market. It would come with easy read instructions and the 'For sale' sign as a finish similar to a recycled product that shows on the outside as well as the material. They could also be coloured by being sprayed or painted to produce more colours.
